Vintage Brooklyn Wedding- 5Becky and Jake were married at Deity Wedding Venue on a warm Fall evening. The charm of this couple was reflected with down-to-earth rustic elements mixed with old-fashioned glamour. The Bride’s Hollywood bias-cut gown paired with the Mad Men style of the Groom’s suit hit the perfect note.

Florals and decor by Sandy Clothier Flowers dressed the entire Space. Lush floral garland was placed on the Chuppah and stairwells. A candle-lit aisle and twinkle light backdrop warmed the Ceremony. The Bride and Bridesmaids carried rustic, pastel bouquets of roses and succulents.

The Reception was a unique cross of burlap and roses. Handmade cakes and cupcakes by Betty Bakery were served on wood slabs. Parting gifts were all-natural and locally-sourced body scrubs from Bride’s own company Fishtails & Mums.

10/16/14  5 stars
“The whole Deity team went above and beyond to make our wedding night special and a night to remember! From the planning to the day of our wedding, the staff was attentive, responsive and so helpful. On the day of our wedding they were on top of everything. They made sure to check-in with my husband and I and helped make the evening flow seamlessly. The decor was beautiful, the food was delicious and many of our guests were in awe at how beautiful the space was! Overall Deity made our wedding dreams come true and we cannot thank them enough for everything.”- Jiselle, Bride

from the Bride: “My Maid of Honor’s fiance’ (Kevin Stahl!) is a talented artist- way more talented than the photos give him credit for- and he did us the favor of creating the frames with song lyrics, and book that holds our rings. The book was Jazz by Toni Morrison. She’s a favorite author of mine, and music is a large part of our 10 year relationship, so it seemed like the perfect merging! Actually, the very first piece of planning we did was our playlist :)

What really made our wedding special, as cliche as it sounds, was having everyone we love in one room. We only had people there who are a large part of our lives (not like, my dad’s lawyer or my mom’s third cousin…).
Brooklyn Wedding Venue Brooklyn Wedding Venue
Our good friend of over 8 years and my husband’s coworker, David Flink officiated our wedding, and one of my closest friends since first grade did a reading for us (How Falling in Love is like Owning a Dog, by Taylor Mali) We’ve had multiple people say to us since that the love in the room was “palpable and tangible”, which means the world to us.

Everyone had a phenomenal time- they gushed over the appetizers, enjoyed the change of scenery when moving from floor to floor, and rocked the dance floor until the last song played (Sinatra- New York New York) at 12:30am.”

from Pennace Photography Blog:

“I was SO excited to photograph Brittany and Kelly’s wedding. I’ve known Kelly for years, as she is mutual friends with a friend of mine from college. I photographed her engagement photos with Brittany back in 2013 and knew they were the perfect match for each other. When they asked me to photograph their wedding at Deity, I was PUMPED. Yarrr!!!

Brittany and Kelly got ready at the nearby Nu Hotel, and then we did a Brooklyn-esque wedding first look on the street. Their wedding theme was Brooklyn – like, *super* Brooklyn. Check out the Metrocard place seating chart, the Brooklyn subway train centerpieces, the Brooklyn Nets shoes, cufflinks, and wedding cake. Their invitations even featured the Brooklyn Bridge. And, to top off the Brooklyn theme? Brittany + Kelly = BK. It was simply meant to be!

Deity is a former synagogue that has been converted into a multi-floor event space. Each floor has a different vibe, and it was the perfect space for their Brooklyn wedding. Getting married in New York City is a unique experience no matter how you do it. For those people looking for a ceremony and reception space, creativity is a must as there are very few “traditional” wedding venues within the city limits. It’s all about finding a unique space and making it work as a wedding venue. Deity fit the bill for Brittany and Kelly perfectly!”

The venue disaster turned miracle: Julie & Chris’ rebooked dinosaur NYC wedding

From Offbeat Bride

15130234154_d33801db6b_c

The Offbeat Bride: Julie, Offbeat Bride Tribe member

Her offbeat partner: Chris

Date and location of wedding: Deity, Brooklyn, NY — May 25, 2014

Our offbeat wedding at a glance: We wanted our wedding to be a reflection of us. Our boutonnieres and bouquets were paper flowers that were made specifically for the person wearing them (i.e. my friend who is a nurse practitioner had her bouquet made Grey’s Anatomy-themed).

15565313150_f50070d6fe_c 15726414286_4a81e47644_b

15564247029_5826239dca_b

Chris likes to refer to my arms as “t-rex like” so we wanted to incorporate that into our wedding, hence Mona the Dinosaur, the t-rex ring bear, and the lollipop favors. Chris designed our save-the-date comics which were then turned into stickers for our wine bottle centerpieces.

We wrote our own vows, with jokes about Nell (from the movie Nell) and caring for each other when we’re old and disabled (like The IT Crowd).

Our cake toppers featured us in our favorite team jerseys (FC Barcelona and the Tampa Bay [Devil] Rays). We highlighted desserts we love and wanted a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Tell us about the ceremony:
Our friend, Leighann, who introduced us and is ordained in NY state, officiated. She was so awesome and did such a good job. We wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to perform our ceremony. Chris and I actually really first got to know each other at her wedding, where I was the officiant and he was a reader, so having her perform our wedding was great.

My cousin, Kelly, and Chris’ old roommate, Nate, did a reading of “A Lovely, Lovely Love Story.” I bought it for Chris on our first dating anniversary, mainly because of the dinosaurs.

Our friend (we often call her our daughter), Jen, read Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall’s decision from “Goodridge vs. Department of Health.”

We borrowed a line from an excellent Offbeat Bride wedding we read earlier this year that featured the line, “And so as Beyonce, the patron saint of marriage said, if you like it, you should put a ring on it and so you shall.” The audience erupted with laughter.

15130698663_53365b7d34_b 15130835703_054ffc7047_b 15726402446_a09691dbf8_b

We read our own vows. Some highlights included, “I will love you, even when you act like Nell, from the movie Nell,” and “You’ve seen me at my worst and I know you’ve seen at my best because I’m at my best when I’m with you.” We ended with a kiss and a fist bump then danced down the aisle to “Higher and Higher.”

Our biggest challenge:
Our original venue owner abruptly shut the doors and took all our money 17 days before our wedding. I had a fairly emotional breakdown (it included crying at a little boy’s bar mitzvah while looking at venues) but between Chris’ positive attitude, our amazing new reBar ex-brides and grooms community, our fantastic friends and family and Caio and Kristine from Deity (who saved the day), we had what probably turned out to be an even better wedding than we originally planned. We can’t thank everyone at Deity enough, we’ll always be grateful to them for helping us put together such an amazing wedding in less than two weeks.

My favorite moment:
For me, it was when Chris read his vows. He even referenced our favorite LIRRconductor, who was clearly hammered one evening and yelled over the intercom, “Attention to the brake man; you… me… yeaaahhhh.” Chris ended his vows with, “In the words of our favorite LIRR conductor: you, me, yeaaaahhh.”

15564900587_db9cafa65d_b 15750233655_094c448240_b

My funniest moment:
Chris and his mom decided to turn their mother/son dance into a medley. It started out with “When You Wish Upon A Star,” segued into “(I Wanna) Rock and Roll All Night,”then turned into “Ninja Rap” (yes, from The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II), and finished with “Fish Heads.” Watching Chris and his mom booty dance was something I will never forget.

What was the most important lesson you learned from your wedding?
Please consider getting wedding insurance. It may seem stupid and a waste but please, if you take anything away from this, please consider it. We’ll likely never see a cent back from the all-inclusive wedding venue we had paid for in full that was stolen (remember, it closed just a couple weeks before the wedding). You never know what could happen over the course of an engagement.

Ghazalle & Eulas’s Magical Brooklyn Wedding was captured by Lindsey Thorne Photography. While Ghazalle got ready at the ultra-hip Nu Hotel, Eulas waited for his Bride at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. This lovely couple had their first look with the dramatic background of the Brooklyn Bridge. Following this moment, the Bridal party moved through the park and to Jane’s Carousel for a once-in-a-lifetime photo shoot. This fabulous crew made their way to Deity Wedding & Event Venue in Downtown Brooklyn for the Ceremony & Reception.

For their Ceremony, the Mother and Aunt of the Bride created a Persian Wedding Table where the vows were to be exchanged. This elaborate spread included candles, coins, mirrors, sweets and drinks, all to signify different aspects of a marriage in Iranian tradition. The Wedding party was accompanied by music provided by professional Violinists, which added a classic, romantic mood to the day. After the vows were said, the couple “Jumped the Broom”, celebrating the African American culture of the Groom.

While guests noshed on Hors D’oeuvres, a Harpist provided ambient music for Cocktail Hour. As the party moved into the Reception, they were greeted by dinner tables adorned with metal trees with white hanging orchids, candles and scattered rose petals.

Dinner was followed by the Cake Cutting under Deity’s famous Tree of of Life. Three flavors of  Wedding Cake were supplied by Empire Cake. After the guests enjoyed dessert, then came the Dancing. Draped across the lavendar-lit dance floor was the sign “Best Day Ever”.

From Black Bride.com Real Weddings Blog

“Cristina and Jonathan’s love story begins in 2006. The two worked at the same company and Jonathan was assigned to fix an issue on Cristina’s work computer. “He took too long to come and access the problem so I complained to my supervisor who in turn yelled at him. He didn’t like me after that. A few months later, our whole office had to get a vaccination shot for tuberculosis and he made fun of me for being afraid of needles. Something compelled me to email him about it and we have been together ever since, almost 9 years,” said Cristina. Cristina and Jonathan solidified their union with a modern Brooklyn wedding, captured by George Street Photo & Video !

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

Engagement story:

“We were going to hang out and grab food at one of our favorite Brooklyn spots, Brooklyn Bridge Park. It was really hot that day and we were waiting for our daughter’s godmother to show up. I was really hungry and annoyed because she was taking too long to come. I thought it was weird when Jonathan suggested we take some family pictures with our daughter in front the Brooklyn Bridge because he doesn’t like to take photos. While we were doing that, I glimpsed a large crowd of people coming toward us but paid no mind to them but when I look again I realized it was all people that I knew. When I turned around to ask Jonathan what was going on, he was already down on one knee. He didn’t even get a chance to ask me anything because I was hysterically crying. Once I calmed down, he asked me to marry him.”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

From the Groom:

“Our wedding exceeded my wildest expectations. Cristina looked so beautiful in her dress and it was the details that she coordinated that made the day so special for me. From the little touches to our personalized cocktail napkins to big flourishes like having a close friend perform the ceremony, I really have to give her and her vision credit. All of those details, along with spending the day surrounded by family and friends who love and support you, added up to a day I will truly never forget.”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

From the Bride:

“After planning for 16 months, I was so ready to be married. The day went by so fast and I tried to savor every bit of it. I was really calm throughout the day until it was time for the ceremony to start, that is when I started to get emotional because I realized it was finally happening. Aside from my daughter being born, it was the best day of my life!”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

Most memorable moment:

“Listening to his personal vows to me really is the most memorable moment for me. I know he loves me but actually getting to hear his feelings put into words, how much he does and how happy he was to marry me was the greatest feeling.”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

What makes your love special?

“We really are best friends above all else. We moved in together pretty early in our relationship and it was really stressful but also rewarding at the same time. After our daughter was born, that is when we realized we wanted to officially become a family.”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

What are you most looking forward to as a married couple?

“Having more kids and spending everyday with my best friend.”

Brooklyn Wedding Reception

Advice for a Bride/Groom on their wedding day:

“Take a step back and savor the moment. The day goes by so fast and there aren’t many times in your life when you get all your family and friends in one room celebrating with you. Also – Hire a videographer!”

David and Regina were married on April 4, 2015. The day was beautiful. A little cold for April, but sunny and perfect. The Hotel Indigo in Downtown Brooklyn provided a graphic background for the Bridal party to get ready and relax before photos and then on to the Ceremony. Regina wore a custom designed dress from an Esty artisan. The expression on the Groom’s face for the “First Look” says it all.

At Brooklyn Bridge Park, the obvious joy of this couple was recorded by Photographer Robert Carlo. The NY transplants had looked at venues all over the world (from Fiji to Atlanta) before they decided on Brooklyn’s Deity Wedding Venue and could not have been happier with the choice.

Robert Carlone Photography- NYC Wedding

The party moved to the Ceremony & Reception Venue. Regina says “We like for things to speak for themselves and Deity allowed our day to do just that. Everything was very personal.” A good friend made our aisle runner with the vows written on it. The Bride’s mom made the Bridesmaids’ pearl bouquets and one of the Bridesmaids made the brooch bouquets that the Bride herself and her daughter carried.

Harpist, Brandee Younger provided a romantic ambience in Deity’s Loft for the exchange of Vows. The Bride says “To play the music that reminded us of our love during our Ceremony.” For Cocktail Hour, Deity mixologists crafted signature cocktails named for the couples’ hometowns. “The Elm” after Regina’s hometown of New Haven, CT aka Elm City. And “The Valley” after David’s hometown of Fort Valley, GA.

According to the couple, Deity’s in-house DJ Ben, did a great job playing the music they all enjoyed throughout the rest of the evening. The Wedding cake was made by Isabella’s Creations who Regina found on Instagram using the power of a hashtag. Videographer Sharif of ShariFilms as well as Robert of Robert Carlo Photography New York both did an amazing job of capturing the look and feel of the day.  The end to a beautiful and perfect day.

Brooklyn is arguably the hippest and most diverse borough in NYC! Home to Brooklyn Bridge Park, Prospect Park and countless restaurants and event venues to choose from; its no wonder so many couples are choosing to tie the knot here. Our photographers recently had the honor of capturing another beautiful wedding at Deity Events. Kristina & Sergio included traditional and modern elements in their wedding .The beautiful bride wore a strapless wedding gown and cathedral length veil and Sergio was dapper in a black tuxedo. The couple took portraits at many of Brooklyn’s iconic locations (courtesy of their Rolls Royce of course) before partying the night away at Deity!

“Bri & Brian are one of the most fun couples you will ever meet. They bring zest and laughter with them wherever they go, and their love for one another, their friends and family, and their city (Brooklyn!) was evident in each moment and detail of their wedding day. Caring and considerate, they were ever the host and hostess to all of those around them. The day brimmed with excitement and joy. And oh boy, did they love to dance! We loved being part of their fabulously festive 1920’s inspired wedding.”

From “The Knot”

Deity Brooklyn Wedding Venue- The Knot -Casey Fatchett Photo

Beth Nagalski (34 and an attorney) and David Cooperstein (33 and an attorney) planned a fun, rustic affair with vintage flair at Deity in Brooklyn, NY. The repurposed, 150-year-old synagogue offered the ultimate location for the event, with its abundance of local artwork and distinctive event spaces on three different floors. “The ceremony and dinner were in the loft on the top floor, the cocktail hour in a lounge on the middle floor and finally we moved into the basement for a dance party,” says Beth.

The Knot/Deity Wedding

Beth and David’s winter wedding called for something a little different when it came to the florals, with many classic varieties being out of season. For Beth’s bouquet, Opalia Flowers put together a stunning arrangement of succulents, brunia berries, dusty miller, seeded eucalyptus and a few blush roses that fused modern and classic styles, while playing up the winter season.

Deity Brooklyn Wedding Venue- The Knot -Casey Fatchett Photo

With an anything-but-average Badgley Mischka gown taking the place of a classic white dress, Beth knew her accessories had to be just as fabulous. Instead of a traditional veil, she added a feathery hairpiece to her classic updo and completed her look with a vintage fur wrap.

The Knot/Deity Wedding

At 6 foot 6 inches, finding a suit that could work with his height proved to be a bit of a challenge for David. Instead of buying off-the-rack, he enlisted the help of Evan DeLaney, a bespoke tailor in Colorado Springs, Colo., who created a custom suit for the wedding with gray pinstripe fabric. He paired the look with a silver tie, white button-down shirt and a sleek white pocket square.

Deity Brooklyn Wedding Venue- The Knot -Casey Fatchett Photo

The Knot/Deity Wedding

After Beth and David exchanged vows in a ceremony in Deity’s top-floor loft officiated by their close friend — the very one that introduced the two — the newlyweds whisked their guests off to Deity’s second floor lounge for cocktail hour. The band Padam Swing kicked off the nights festivities with gypsy swing tunes and got guests in the mood to party.

The Knot/Deity Wedding

The couple filled the historic venue with unique, personal touches like terrarium centerpieces with playful scenes of the couple hiking and biking, two of Beth and David’s favorite activities, a robot cake topper and a heritage table with family wedding photos displayed in vintage bottles. “I love moss and terrariums and hate how wedding flowers just get thrown away,” says Beth, “so we had terrariums as centerpieces that people could take home afterwards.” A close friend, the very same one that introduced the two, officiated the ceremony and Beth and David exchanged vows they’d written themselves, as well as one they’d each written for each other. New twists on wedding traditions offered another personal element to the winter wedding, like Beth’s glam, sequined Badgley Mischka gown and a tower of decadent doughnuts from local icon, Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop. A “gypsy jazz” band provided a lively soundtrack for cocktail hour and after dinner the newlyweds hosted a dance party of epic proportions in the Deity Cellar, an exposed brick subterranean space with a gold coffered ceiling.

The Knot/Deity WeddingLocated only a block away from their apartment in Brooklyn, NY, Deity offered the ultimate location for the couple’s eclectic, vintage affair. The 150-year-old former synagogue was transformed into a unique, modern venue in the early 2000s filled with artwork, stained glass and light fixtures from local artists. The couple made use of all three of the venue’s distinctive floors, hosting the each portion of the day on a different level. “The ceremony and dinner were in the loft on the top floor, the cocktail hour in a lounge on the middle floor and finally we moved into the basement for a dance party,” says Beth.

Brooklyn Indian Wedding

“I shoot a handful of weddings each year, mostly for people I know or from referrals of people I know.  This summer was all over the map (literally) with weddings in Maui, the Bahamas, Vienna (Austria, not Virginia!) two in the Pacific Northwest and this past weekend, the wedding of Brian Whitehurst and Jeena Kadakia in Brooklyn, NY.

The two-day event began with a Hindu ceremony on Friday. Lots of beautiful colors, traditions and food!”

Brooklyn Indian Wedding

“Brian has a friend who got us clearance to shoot at Steiner Studios, a huge Hollywood-style production studio on the site of the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard. Lots of films have been shot here as well as shows like HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire.” We were given access to the rooftop of the studios to shoot portraits.”

Brooklyn Indian Wedding

“We then headed to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) which is located around both the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. We weren’t the first to come up with this location for portraits, there must have been a dozen other shoots happening in the area – engagement portraits, wedding couples and fashion shoots.”

I was fortunate to have such a beautiful couple to photograph on a perfect day with overcast skies so lots of nice, even light. As we walked around the DUMBO area, there were so many great urban backgrounds and locations.

“Brian had an idea for a wedding party portrait, which I didn’t really understand and tried to talk him out of it because the lighting was going to be tricky. We didn’t have a lot of time before the guests arrived and my wireless remote strobes were not working properly. Not to get too geeky technical, but I didn’t want to use direct strobe and the ceiling was black, so bouncing was not an option.  I tried not to panic and thanks to Adam Schultz, my assistant and second shooter for the event, we pulled if off with one strobe covered with a napkin that acted as a diffuser. The strobe was attached to a light stand being held overhead and to the left, by Adam. The result is one of my favorite shots from the wedding! Kind of reminds me of a Sopranos cast shot.”

“Our team started with the beautiful bride at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. A popular choice amongst couples getting married in Brooklyn venues, the hotel offers over 665 rooms and suites with amazing views of downtown Brooklyn and the Manhattan skyline! Alison was the perfect muse for this look! Tall and slender she was stunning in a gold toned wedding dress with feathered skirt. She styled her hair in romantic waves reminiscent of styles worn in the 20’s and completed her look with a bouquet of ivory flowers.”

“Jake waited for his future bride in Brooklyn Bridge park and was dressed to the T’s in a black tuxedo with bow tie. They posed for intimate portraits and Wedding Party pics (perfect example of how black bridesmaids dresses can bring a touch of elegance to your big day). Afterwards they headed over to Deity for their ceremony.”

“We love the distinctive style that each level offers at this unique venue. Perfect for the contemporary couple seeking a non-traditional venue with in-house catering and affordable package pricing! Deity is owned and operated by a married couple (how appropriate!) who understand the craziness of planning a wedding and can help you with every detail from your ceremony to reception!”

“Alison and Jake’s wedding celebration was clearly planned to perfection! They exchanged vows under dimmed stringed lights in the 2nd floor loft and joined their guests for cocktails in the lounge (check out that tree!) before partying the night away in the newly renovated cellar.”
